Thuvaram paruppu thuvaiyal

Simple thuvaiyal prepared with red gram / thuvaram paruppu / toor dhal which goes well with white rice, rasam and appalam.

Ingredients:

      • 1 handful/ 1/4 cup – Red gram / thuvaram paruppu / toor dhal
      • 2 clove – Garlic
      • 2 nos – Dry red chillies
      • 3 tbsp – Coconut grated
      • Salt as needed
      • 2 tsp – Oil

Thuvaram paruppu thuvaiyal process

Preparation method:

  1. Heat a pan, dry roast thuvaram paruppu / toor dhal / red gram until they are slightly golden brown in color or until raw smell goes, set it aside.
  2. In the same pan, add oil followed by garlic, dry red chillies and grated coconut, saute for few seconds. Then add roasted red gram and once again saute for few seconds.
  3. Allow them to cool and transfer this mixture to a mixer grinder. Add required salt and grind it by sprinkling little water to a coarse paste. Simple thuvaiyal is ready and serve with white rice, rasam, appalam.

Notes:

  • Do not over roast red gram otherwise burnt smell will come from the thuvaiyal.
  • Do not add too much water while grinding.

    South India Sambar powder
    (without Garlic)

    1. Red chilies 250 Gram
    (My mother uses round chilies
    You can also use long chilies as
    Per your kitchen practice)

    2. Dhaniya –Corriander Seeds 250 Gram
    (use of equal quantity of Dhania only
    Will give the special south indian flavor)

    3. Bengal Gram- Kadalai parappu 250 ml measure
    or one azhakku
    (The traditional measure of one azhakku
    Is equivalent to approximately 250 ml or
    One standard stainless steel water tumbler)

    4. Thoor Dhal one fist full (may be 100 gram or ml)

    5. Vendhayam – Fenugreek again one fist full

    6. Black pepper and Jeerakam (cumin seed)
    As per your taste and practice, along with

    7. One or two lengths of long turmeric as per your
    Ususal practice and taste-broken.

    Sun dry the mix for a day and grind them to fine mix

    South Indian Rasam powder
    (Without Garlic)


    1. Dhania –Fenugreek - 2 X 250 ml
    or two azhakku
    (250 ml is one normal stainless steel water tumbler)
    (The quantity of dhania is very important here)

    2. Thoor Dhall – 250 ml or one azhakku

    3. One fist full Bengal Gram –Kadalai parappu

    4. One fist full black pepper

    5. One fist full Jeeragam –Cumin seed

    6. Chillies round or long as per your requirement or practice

    7. One or two long turmeric broken

    Sun dry them and grind to coarse mix, and not fine like sambar mix
