Senaikkizhangu kola urundai / yam balls
Yam is considered as a healthy low-fat food and is a rich source of essential fatty acids (Omega-3 fatty acids) which are known to increase the good cholesterol levels in the blood. I prepared kola urundai with this healthy yam and it tasted awesome.
Ingredients:
- 400 gm – Senaikkizhangu / elephant yam (as shown in the picture)
- 1 no – Onion (chopped finely)
- 2 nos – Garlic (chopped finely)
- 1/4 tsp – Turmeric powder
- 1/2 tsp to 1 tsp – Red chilli powder
- 1/4 tsp – Garam masala powder
- 2 tbsp – Curry leaves (chopped)
- 3 tbsp – Coriander leaves (chopped)
- Salt as needed
- Oil enough to deep fry
For grinding:
- 5 tbsp – Roasted bengal gram / pottukadalai
- 1/2 tsp – Fennel seeds / Perunjeeragam
- 1/2 tsp – Cumin seeds
Preparation method:
- Remove skin, chop senaikkizhangu / yam into big chunks and wash them thoroughly. Take a big vessel, add chopped yam and enough water to cook along with little salt, bring it to boil. Cook them until they are well cooked and then rinse the water completely, mash it well. Set aside.
- Take a mixer grinder, grind the items given in the list for grinding to a fine powder. Set aside.
- Take a mixing bowl, add mashed yam, chopped onion and garlic, chopped coriander and curry leaves, turmeric powder, red chilli powder, garam masala powder, ground powder and salt needed, mix everything well.
- Make small size ball as shown in the picture and deep fry them in a hot oil until they are golden brown in color or well cooked. Serve hot with tomato ketchup.
Notes:
- If you find it difficult in mashing yam, you can also grate them using grater.
- 1/2 cup of senaikkizhangu / yam is equal to 2 1/2 cup mashed yam.
